When I go to a restaurant and plop down my hard-earned money, there are just a few things I wish the restaurant employees/management to do/not to do. Sake Cafe (Vets.), please listen up:
*Please do not rush me when it comes to ordering. I know what time you close. Do not tell me that it's almost time for "last call" on the kitchen. If you would actually come to my table within 10 minutes of my being seated, I might have been able to ask you the questions I needed answered in order to place my order.
*Once you have rushed me to place my order, you know, since we were holding everybody up, proceed to take about 15 minutes too long to serve me my food.
*I do not need you to hover over me while I eat my dinner, but it would be nice if you checked our beverage glass levels or asked how our food was once it was served. Please make an appearance other than to pester me to hurry with my order, serve us, and to present us with the check.
*Once the clock hits Closing O'clock, it is not necessary to do the following while patrons are eating: spray nearby tables with cleaning solution, stack up all empty seats onto tables, sweep the floors.
*Also, when it's Closing O'clock, employees should remain in the waiter's section, not loudly chatting in the dining room about employee meals and personal matters (while they stack the chairs & spray the cleaning solution, of course).
*And lastly, please do not come to my table toward the end of my meal, ask, "howaseverythingguysihaveyourcheckhere", and expect me to answer you with a smile.
Freddy and I decided to take a night to ourselves, sans kids, and make it a date. We were in the mood for sushi, but couldn't make it out until 10:00 PM. After dropping off the baby at the M-I-L's in Metairie, we knew we had only one option; Sake Cafe on Veterans Blvd. Both Sake Cafe locations are open until 11:00 PM, but we didn't want to walk into the Magazine locale right at 11:00. We arrived at 10:30. I do not think half an hour 'til closing is too close to the closing time to have been treated as badly as we were. If it makes a difference, by the time we were served, there were still 5 other tables there other than us. (Oh, and don't forget the table of 8 next to us that played paper football!) I have worked in various aspects of the service industry for 12 years and know that no matter how close to closing time a guest comes in, you make them feel welcome. Don't want to be there? Get another job.
I have patronized the Veterans Blvd. Sake Cafe many times before (pre-Katrina) and have never been subjected to such poor service and an unpleasant atmosphere. No, it's not Galatoire's, but (A)sushi is not cheap, (B)Sake Cafe has tried to maintain itself as a nice establishment, and (C)one should not be treated like this anywhere.
This was the first time I agreed that it be appropriate to stiff a server. I did not even bother to speak to management since I know I will never return to that location. Yes, the food was good, but this young lady gave us the worst service in all my years of dining out. Where Freddy wrote in "0" in the gratuity spot, I added a little note, from me to them: "Worst Experience EVER. Thank you for stacking chairs while I attempted to enjoy my meal." I would have written more, but there isn't much space on a credit card receipt to do so.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 7:55 PM...that's when you flip the receipt over and write your 5 paragraph essay. i suspect usually it gets ignored, but once, i got a phone call, an apology and an offer for a free dinner for 2.
that was a smart manager.
i know waiting tables can have its rotten moments, and i know how much you want to leave as soon as you can after closing, but there is no excuse for that kind of behavior. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 9:34 PMLike I said, I will never step foot in that place again. That is why I did not bother to leave any contact info, speak to the manager, etc. In addition to buying my dinner, they would have to pay me to sit there. I was that pissed. Over at livejournal.com/community/.../53163.html , a few others said they have received shitty service, too. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 7:11 AMjesus, those waiters were monsters! maybe since they are in high demand post-Katrina, they feel like they can get away with whatever behaviour they want to, while the customers suck it up. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 7:12 AMNew Orelans needs workers to get back to work. Places cannot reopen without having the employee base to do so. That is my observation after spending last week in New Orelans. I will be back again for several days this week.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 8:09 AMDuring all 4 or so visits to the Magazine St. Sake, I have been annoyed and outright insulted by the staff. After the first time, a friend convinced me that my experience was not the norm, the food is great and I should give it another go, which I did. It was fine. The next time = rude. The last time the service was abhorrently rude and incompetent.
buh.
I am sorry about your experience, but glad to know that I am not the only one in the world getting dookey service at the Sake Café. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 10:27 AMI had a horrible experience on Magazine also. The waiter took forever to take our order, took another 20 minutes to get my iced tea then took another 20 to process my credit card. It took way over an hour for lunch. And it was already slowing down when we got there. I'm over the post-Katrina excuse for rudeness. You're still a business and you should still offer customer service. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 10:46 AMKatrina was a horrible thing, but people need to start to move on now. There is still alot of rebuilding to do, but the people of New Orleans need to get back to work and make the place inviting, again.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sat, September 9, 2006 - 10:54 PMMy husband and I have been going to Sake Cafe on Veterans since it opened. Though our experience there has never been that bad, I have to agree that on several occasions our glasses remained empty for very long periods and sometimes the wait for the food seemed extreme. We have continued to go back because, well, they have the best, most inventive and just damed good food of any sushi restaurant we've been too. My brother-in-law, who has worked for a Japanese company and went back and forth to Japan and is crazy for sushi, makes it a point to take us to Sake Cafe whenever he's in town. He said that much of the menu is different than anything he's had elsewhere. He has had sushi all over the world. I've also talked to Japanese natives, at work, who love Sake Cafe (I think they go to the uptown location. I've never been there.) They say it's nothing like what they're used to; but they really like it. So, yeah, if I had as an extreme experience there as you have, I'd reconsider going back.
A little off the subject, Cafe East is just a couple of blocks away from my broken house. One evening, Pre-K, a friend and I were sitting in the bar area for coctails and the bartender told us that the owner of the Upotown Sake Cafe owns Cafe East. As I mentioned, I've not been to the uptown Cafe East, but I have to say that the service at Cafe East, when they first opened, was very uneven; sometimes downright odd. There was one woman there, I don't remember if she waited on us or just seated us, maybe both, who we found a little creepy. She kept referring to us as "my friends". "Here are the menus My Friends." "What would you like to drink "My Friends". It was just weird. We referred to her as Vampirella and made a joke of looking for her hanging by her toes from the sign at night. I haven't seen her there in quite some time. We and a friend's family booked a table a week in advance for Mothers' day. We still had to wait in the lobby for nearly and hour for a table. They had overbooked horribly. But once we were finally seated, the service was excellent and all the food was very good. It was the first time I'd had the escargot appetizer and I do have to recommend it. Last time I went there, I just ordered it and that wonderful red curry seafood soup. It was plenty. I think they're finally really getting themselves sorted out. If you're tired of the same old style of American Chinese food with chicken, beef, shrimp or pork in some sort of cloying sauce, try Cafe East. I think they do have a few of that sort of dish on the menu, but the rest of the menu is a lot of fun. I especially recommend the Tropical Summer Roll.
Best wishes to all,
Moontwister -

Sun, September 10, 2006 - 12:30 AMOn the other hand, the food at Ninja last night was outstanding. Our waitress was a little overly perky but prompt and attentive and the miso soup was sooooo good! -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 7:34 AMI love Ninja - it has always been my favorite NOLA sushi haunt. I probably ate there weekly when I was in college. -
-
Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Fri, September 15, 2006 - 9:52 PMNinja has been my favorite for years, but the last few times I went - and its been months - the service and the food was awful.
I'm glad to hear they'e cleared that up -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, September 17, 2006 - 5:06 PMI've been just a few times since Katrina, but it's been great every time, both service and food. Don't get the assorted pickles appetizer, though. (It's scary.) -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 10:19 AMI've been to the Veterans Blvd. location several times. This was the worst experience I've had, and leading up to this visit, was progressively getting worse. I won't be going back, even if someone else paid. I don't think the menu is any more exciting than any other Japanese restaurant. They have a few inventive rolls, but you could go to Mikimoto (Mid-City) and get a huge selection of inventive rolls at a better price, along with better service.
Cafe East tries too hard to be an upscale & "hip" restaurant. Their dishes are good, but I just can't stand to sit in that place. The servers are annoying beyond belief.
Just as a sidenote, we've done NOLA Eats dinners at both of the above restaurants.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 12:35 PMYou're probably not going to want to hear this, but as a server, I do not go into a restaurant within 1/2 an hour of closing o'clock.
In Japan, if you go to a restaurant within an hour of closing, propriety demands that you ask them if they are still open for business. -
-
Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 6:06 PMI wouldn't just assume that a restaurant is happy with someone coming in 30 mins. 'til closing. Of course we didn't just walk in and demand a table. But when the (what appeared to be) manager insists that it is not an inconvenience and then the server proceeds to give me the worst service in history, then there is where the problem lies. And Sake Cafe is hardly a traditional Japanese restaurant. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, September 11, 2006 - 11:16 PMThis is hardly Japan, either. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 8:50 PMOh, and speaking of this not being Japan, the funniest thing I ever saw at Mardi Gras (besides the Hare Krishnas and some Catholic nuns sharing a float) was a group of Japanese tourists taking pictures of the trash left over after the Endymion parade. The looks of stunned amazement on their faces were priceless. -

Oh, no! You hurt my feelings!!
Tue, February 20, 2007 - 5:09 PMThanks for the input, Anonymous! I'm so pleased that my commentary on the terrible service at Sake Cafe on Veterans Hwy. encouraged you to join Tribe.net TODAY and join only NOLA Eats. Have a great day!

Wed, February 28, 2007 - 1:42 PMamen.
I have had the same experience!
I've posted my review over at Yelp.com: www.yelp.com/biz/scTUlCcNlTG1Mf853s7Wew
I was so disappointed. Because I am not even a sushi fan, but my friend was in the mood for it and he was only in town for a short time so I went along with it. I never thought I'd experience so much hell. I will never eat here again. -

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 9:30 AMAbsolutely wrong. I am a New Orleans native and have eaten at my fair share of restaurants. I can say with conviction that not only does Sake Cafe serve some of the freshest food in town, but they are a first-rate restaurant. Their chefs are obviously trained in Japan and I have not found better, fresher, and better tasting Sushi in the US. If you have bad experiences, call it like it is but don't go trashing restaurants with no first-hand experience. This is my favorite place in town. Why would anyone return after 3 bad experiences? I've been there dozens of times and have zero complaints. If you didn't like the restaurant, please quitcho bitching and do not go back - we'll take your table. Thanks.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 9:36 AMOh and Bruce, you are an idiot for saying a restaurant should be shut down by the board of health when you said yourself that you haven't eaten there. You're an uncouth, mannerless moron who has probably never left the city in his life. I will NEVER come back to this website. Your postings are baseless, useless filth and you've zero credibility as a food critic. -
-
Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 9:51 AMwhoa, dude, back off
this is a tribe for critiques. so yes, people will bash a few places.
you're taking this waaaay to personally.
i personally thought the place was just ok, i've had -much- better sushi in the city, and outside. but hey awesome, i'm glad you like it. -
-
Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 6:20 PMI agree, Wish. I have had better sushi elsewhere than either Sake Cafe location.

Re: Sake Cafe, no good on Vets. Blvd. (Metairie)
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 6:19 PMI don't recall anyone here saying they were professional food critics. I think everyone gathers here to give their opinions of restaurants, whether it's good or bad, and to find new places to explore.
FYI, Bruce travels A LOT and doesn't live in New Orleans. So much for not passing judgment on people/places you don't know, huh?
